3.2 Replay outside of sleep
Sequential reactivation is not confined to sleep. During quiet wakefulness, place-cell sequences recur at compressed timescales, and in rodents these waking events are at least as frequent as those observed in slow-wave sleep. Whether the same phenomenon is measurable in humans with non-invasive recordings remains an open methodological question, and the few attempts to date have relied on decoding approaches whose sensitivity is difficult to establish.
The functional significance of waking replay is likewise unsettled: proposals range from immediate memory stabilisation to prospective planning, and these are rarely distinguished experimentally.

WHY THIS ISN'T A BACKLOG
No count of open questions appears in the navigation, the window title, or the dock. The one number in the chrome is 318 — how many questions exist, which goes up and is meant to. Age is a right-aligned mono column in the same grey as everything else and can be sorted either way; nothing turns colour at thirty days, ninety days, or ever.
Amber marks open and nothing else — not late, not urgent. Settled questions go grey rather than green, so the screen doesn't reward closing things.
WHAT MAKES IT INVITING ON DAY 400
The strip at the top of the list is a random draw from questions you haven't opened in months — the list's default gesture is browsing, not clearing. Shuffle is a first-class sort. Oldest-first is offered as archaeology rather than penance.
Provenance is what makes an old question worth reopening: a bare line of text ages badly, but p.7, three years ago, while reading X is still a live lead. That is why it is on every row rather than behind a click.
